TPToA Podcast 216 – Shadow and Bone

An expansive fantasy that feels original and familiar all at once.
It's filled with standard Y.A. Tropes and themes, and occasionally becomes predictable, but it's stunning visuals and likeable characters manage to get it over the line and make it quite special.

Sun Summoners
Love the costumes and the locations, they do some heavy, HEAVY lifting for world building.
The Russian inspired setting feels unfamiliar and new, a change from "standard" fantasy.
As an adaptation of two books into one series it works surprisingly well.
Dark Heretics
It's fairly predictable and relies on some standard Y.A. tropes for its storytelling.
Like all fantasy it has a LOT of exposition and funny names to slog through initially.
Occasionally its plot contrivances stray from "convenient" towards "ridiculous".

AWESOME

In this podcast we are heading to the Russian-inspired fantasy lands of Ravka in the new series Shadow And Bone on Netflix, based on the first book of the Grisha Trilogy (Shadow and Bone) and the first book in the Six of Crows duology (Six of Crows) all of which fall under the mantle of the Grishaverse created by Leigh Bardugo. In the Netflix series we follow the perilous adventures of Alina Starkov (Jessie Li Mei) as she comes into her own as the Sun-singer and at the same time the machinations of Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter) and his criminal crew as they attempt to make their fortune the less-than-legal way.

Join Dion, Jill, Peta and Quinny to see if this series based on the Y.A. fantasy trilogy has found is own special kind of Grisha magic, or if it’s accidentally wandered too far into The Fold and can’t find its way back.

A magical shout out to the powerful stream whisperers who regularly finger-waggle their magical Grisha powers directly into the live-chat during the Twitch stream, each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST.
